The Cabernet Franc Grape

Cabernet Franc can be considered a play maker in most of its appearances.  It is often blended with fuller-bodied varieties and used for its peppery, herbaceous finish and floralaromas.

In the Bordeaux style it is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but it is also bottled as 100% Cabernet Franc in a number countries including the USA, Argentina, Chile and Australia.

Although primarily known as a blending grape, Cabernet Franc should also be thanked for it's famous offspring.  In around 1997 a DNA test proved that this grapes sworded affair with the Sauvignon Blanc grape produced the variety that we all know and love, Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cabernet Franc is lighter than Cabernet Sauvignon and tends to still pack a flavoursome punch, but offers up a more pronounced perfume which will sometimes smack a vegetal strike that you wont find with it’s fruity offspring.

In the New World, producers will often delay harvesting to minimize the leafy notes and enhance the fruitiness.
