The Chardonnay Grape

Chardonnay grapes are very sensitive to their environments which means the way they are produced and where they are grown will have a huge influence on the flavour of the wine they produce.

If grown in warmer climates the wine tends to have a buttery, honey type flavour, but in cooler climates the flavours are more fruity.

Chardonnay is an important ingredient in many sparkling wines and none more so than the wines of Champagne.  In fact, 'Blanc de Blanc' Champagne is made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes.

In France Chardonnay gained its fame in the Burgundy and Chablis regions.   Now it is grown all over the world from England to New Zealand and is one of the most widely planted grape varietals, even more so than Cabernet Sauvignon.

Historically Chardonnay was always fermented in oak barrels, with the boom in popularity some producers now soak oak chips in the wine to impart some of the woody charachteristics and of course we now also see many ‘unoaked’ Chardonnays.
