The Cinsault Grape

Cinsault (sometimes spelt Cinsaut) is probably best known for its offspring the South African grape Pinotage.  In South Africa Cinsault is known as Hermitage and crossed with Pinot Noir you can see how Pinotage gained its name. 

Due to its productivity and tolerance to heat it is an important grape in the Languedoc and also the French colonies of Morocco and Algeria.

The high yield of these vines can mean that it offers little in the way of flavour and aroma, but if managed correctly and the yields are kept to a minimum, it can produce flavourful wines with soft tannins.  It is often made into rose wine, or blended to soften some harsher varieties.
