The Gewurztraminer Grape

Gewürztraminer is an aromatic white wine grape often assiciated with sweet/ off-dry wines but it also makes exquisite dry wines too.  It is a variety with a pink to red skin colour, which makes it a "white wine grape" as opposed to the blue to black-skinned varieties commonly referred to as "red wine grapes".

The wine has aromas of lychees, roses and passion fruits and compliment spicy food excellently.

The grape is of germanic origin (probably the German speaking South Tyrol in Italy) but is grown all over the world: Spain, Slovenia, Italy, France, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Luxembourg, Moravia, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, Australia, Canada, German, the USA and South Africa.

Gewürztraminer is particularly fussy about soil and climate. The vine is vigorous, it hates chalky soils and it's very susceptible to disease. It needs dry and warm summers and ripens erratically and late. Its natural sweetness means that in hot climates it looses it's elegance as there is not enough acidity to balance the huge amounts of sugar. On the other hand, picking early to retain the acidity, means that the varietal aromas do not develop.

A tricky number, but worth it when you get a really good one!
