The Ugni Blanc Grape

The Ugni Blanc grape yields huge quantities of fruit - the picture speaks for itself.  But with huge yields comes a somewhat simple characteristic.  Wines are generally quite simple in character, light and inoffensive.

Ugni Blanc is also known as Trebbiano in Italy, where it is responsible for about a third of total Italian white wine production.

Ugni Blanc is the traditional grape used to produce Balsamic vinegar (the colour of Balsamic vinegar stems from the long maturation period in oak barrels).

It is prolifically grown in the Charentes region on the west coast of France, where it is used to produce Cognac, and also further south to produce Armagnac.

In fact, much of France's industrial alcohol is derived from the distillation of Ugni Blanc.
