The Rise of Indigenous Grape Varietals: Exploring the Authentic Flavours of Local Terroir In the vast and diverse world of wine, a growing trend is capturing the attention of enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike— the resurgence of indigenous grape varietals. As we navigate through the vineyards of 2023, the spotlight is turning toward the unique and authentic flavours that local terroirs can offer. Join us on a journey of discovery as we explore the rise of indigenous grape varietals and the rich tapestry of tastes they bring to the wine glass. Embracing Terroir: A Return to Local Roots Terroir, the unique combination of soil, climate, and geography that imparts distinctive characteristics to a wine, has become a focal point for winemakers and consumers alike. Indigenous grape varietals, deeply rooted in their local terroirs, are gaining prominence as they showcase the authenticity of a region's winemaking traditions. From the mineral-rich soils of Santorini to the sun-kissed vineyards of South America, winemakers are embracing their local identity. Rediscovering Forgotten Gems: Ancient Varietals Resurface The world of wine is filled with a treasure trove of ancient and nearly forgotten grape varietals. Winemakers are now rediscovering these hidden gems, reviving ancient traditions and bringing back varietals that may have once faced obscurity. This revival adds a layer of historical depth to the wine industry, allowing consumers to taste and appreciate the heritage and stories behind each bottle. Unique Flavour Profiles: A Symphony of Tastes Indigenous grape varietals offer a diverse range of flavour profiles that set them apart from more widely known international varieties. From the aromatic Assyrtiko of Greece to the robust Tannate of Uruguay, each grape tells a unique story through its flavours, providing a sense of place that resonates with the soil from which it springs. Exploring these distinctive tastes is like embarking on a flavourful journey around the globe. Sustainability and Biodiversity: Preserving Ecosystems As the world becomes more environmentally conscious, the focus on sustainability in winemaking has never been stronger. Indigenous grape varietals are often well-adapted to their native environments, requiring less intervention and chemical inputs. This inherent resilience promotes biodiversity, contributing to the overall health of ecosystems and fostering a sustainable approach to viticulture. Cultural Heritage in a Bottle: Wines with a Story to Tell Each bottle of wine crafted from indigenous grape varietals is a vessel carrying not just flavours but also the cultural heritage of a region. Winemakers take pride in preserving and showcasing the unique traditions and stories embedded in their local viticulture. Tasting these wines becomes a journey through time and culture, allowing consumers to connect with the rich tapestry of a particular wine-growing region. Conclusion: As we raise our glasses to the diverse and authentic world of wine in 2023, the rise of indigenous grape varietals takes centre stage. From the revival of ancient grapes to the celebration of unique terroirs, these wines offer a passport to the rich and flavourful heritage of winemaking. Exploring indigenous grape varietals is not just about tasting wine; it's an invitation to connect with the land, history, and culture that shape each bottle. Here's to the vibrant and authentic tapestry of flavours that indigenous grape varietals bring to our glasses. Cheers!

  • Sustainable RailwayHill | Hannibal Brown

Simpsons Wine Estate, Kent, 'RailwayHill', Rosé 2022 Winemaker: Leigh Sparrow Region: Kent Subregion: Kent Country: England Alcohol: 12.5% Dry/Sweetvalue: 1 (1 is dry, 7 is very sweet) ResidualSugar: 7 Contains Sulphites: Yes Vegetarian/Vegan: Yes/Yes Milk/Eggs: No/No Organic: No Biodynamic: No ProductCode: 6392519A Case unit of measure: 6X75CL FormatsAvailable: 75cl Closure: Mushroom Cork This delicate and fruity Pinot Noir roséhas fresh aromas of watermelon and lychee, with peachy, strawberry flavours and a delightfully smooth texture. Producer Note: Charles and Ruth Simpson have been making award-winning wines in the South of France since 2002. In 2012, attracted by the quality of the terroir and the opportunity to become part of one of the most dynamic wine producing regions in the world, they brought their expertise back to the UK, establishing Simpsons Wine Estate. Aspiring to produce the finest quality English wine, they gradually planted 30 hectares of vineyards on the iconic chalk terroir of the North Downs and built a state-of-the-art winery. They are members of Sustainable Wines of Great Britain. In 2016, the Simpsons saw their first harvest. With a strong focus on provenance, they produce a highly acclaimed range of exclusively estate-grown still and sparkling wines, including the Chalklands Classic Cuvée 2016, which won a gold medal in the 2019 Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships. Vintage: The start of the 2022 growing season was cool so the vines were slow to shoot which meant frost damage was avoided. It was a warm sunny growing season with very little rain which led to excellent fruit flavours and ripeness. At one stage there was concern the dry conditions would lead to a smaller than normal crop, however the chalk soils provided the vines with adequate moisture to provide an ample harvest. Vineyard: Simpsons Wine Estate is situated in the Elham Valley; an unspoilt seam in the North Downs of Kent where the contours of the land, the climate and the soil are excellent for viticulture. The intensely lime-rich chalk soil forms part of the same chalk ridge that stretches from southern England to Burgundy. The Guyot trained vines are trained on vertical foliage wires to help with canopy management. The vines are planted at a density of 4,200 vines per hectare with a range of Burgundian clones on either Fercal or 41B rootstocks. They are grown on south facing slopes, ensuring heat accumulation in the day and cold air drainage at night. The vineyard is less than eight miles from the coast, providing a crucial maritime influence insulating the fruit against intense temperature variations. Grass cover crops between the rows encourage biodiversity within the vineyard. Pruning and harvesting takes place by hand and they are signed up to the WineGB’s Sustainability Scheme. Winemaking: Made with as little intervention as possible. The hand-picked grapes were whole bunch pressed and cold settled for 48 hours prior to racking. The must underwent a long and slow fermentation in stainless tanks with wild and selected aromatic yeasts at controlled temperatures of 14 to 16°C. This wine did not go through malolactic conversion, retaining a crisp and vibrant character, but spent time on fine yeast lees to build palate weight, before being bottled in the following spring. TastingNote: This delicate and fruity Pinot Noir roséhas fresh aromas of watermelon and lychee, with peachy, stone-fruit flavours and a delightfully smooth texture. Grape: Pinot Noir 100%

With a strong focus on provenance, they produce a highly acclaimed range of exclusively estate-grown still and sparkling wines, including the Chalklands Classic Cuvée 2016, which won a gold medal in the 2019 Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships. Vintage: The 2019 growing season was very typical of East Kent with good amounts of sunshine but not the exceptional warmth of 2018. The grapes developed excellent intensity of flavour, balanced by natural acidity. The first half of harvest ran smoothly before rainy spells resulted in few breaks in harvesting. Due to the excellent vineyard sites and diligent canopy management, the quality of fruit overall was of high, leading to distinctive wines that will continue to develop and unfurl with time. Vineyard: Simpsons Wine Estate is situated in the Elham Valley; an unspoilt seam in the North Downs of Kent where the contours of the land, the climate and the soil are excellent for viticulture. The intensely lime-rich chalk soil forms part of the same chalk ridge that stretches from southern England through the Champagne region and on to Burgundy. The vineyard is less than eight miles from the coast, providing a crucial maritime influence insulating the fruit against intense temperature variations. Pruning and harvesting takes place by hand and they are signed up to the WineGB’s Sustainability Scheme. Winemaking: The estate-grown grapes were hand-picked over a two-week period. Each variety is vinified separately, the grapes were whole bunch pressed and fermented with selected yeasts. Malolactic conversion took place and the wines spent three months in stainless steel tanks ageing on light lees. After a series of tastings, the wines were blended, filtered and bottled to undergo the ‘prise de mousse’. Following the bottle fermentation, the wine spent 20 months ageing on the lees. TastingNote: The epitome of English elegance, this rich golden sparkling wine has enticing aromas of caramelised pear and floral millefeuille, combined with bright citrus flavours, linear precision and impressive length. Grape: Pinot Noir 60%, Chardonnay 40%
